Is it time to replace your Astral 150 ventilator air inlet filter?

SITUATION:

Air inlet filters on ResMed Astral 150 home ventilators are not always being routinely checked or replaced. A dirty or obstructed filter can restrict airflow, causing the ventilator to work harder and potentially resulting in overheating, reduced performance or device alarms. This QuickHit was developed to support early recognition of a dirty air inlet filter and reinforce routine inspection and replacement practices to promote safe, reliable ventilator function.

BACKGROUND:

The Astral 150 air inlet filter is located at the back of the ventilator beneath the filter cover (see image below). It helps protect the child’s lungs by trapping dust, lint, pet dander, pollen and other airborne particles before they enter the ventilator and are carried through the breathing circuit. Keeping the filter clean also supports adequate airflow, helps maintain reliable ventilator performance and prevents debris from accumulating on internal components, including sensors and electronic circuitry.

ASSESSMENT:

A dirty or obstructed air inlet filter may:

  • Cause the air delivered through the breathing circuit to become unusually warm
  • Cause the ventilator to overheat
  • Trigger alarms or error messages, such as an obstruction alarm
  • Prevent the Learn Circuit test from passing

Inspect the filter for visible dirt or dust accumulation. A new filter is white and will gradually turn grey as debris accumulates. Replace the filter when it appears noticeably grey, soiled, discoloured or darkened

RECOMMENDATION:

Connected Care recommends the following practices when caring for a child using an Astral 150 home ventilator in home and community settings:

  1. Inspect the air inlet filter monthly for dirt, dust, moisture, damage, and correct installation.
  2. Replace the filter every 6 months, or sooner if it appears grey, visibly dirty, wet, damaged or obstructed. More frequent replacements may be required in dusty environments. VEP supplies filters every six months; additional filters must be purchased from a respiratory vendor.
  3. Do not wash or reuse the air inlet filter.
  4. Always operate the ventilator with an air inlet filter installed and keep replacement filters readily available at home.
  5. Follow the child’s individualized care plan and the VEP Astral Cleaning and Maintenance Guide.
  6. If the ventilator becomes unusually warm, overheats or continues to alarm after the filter has been checked or replaced, follow the child’s emergency plan and contact the appropriate clinical or equipment support. If the child shows signs of respiratory distress, initiate the prescribed emergency response.
  7. The use of an air outlet bacterial/viral filter is also strongly recommended to reduce the amount of dust, particles, and microorganisms reaching the child through the breathing circuit. This filter is purchased from a respiratory vendor. It is recommended to replace this monthly.
  8. Replace the Circuit Adaptor every 6 months, as recommended in the VEP Cleaning Guide.
