Paediatric Tracheostomy

Description

This full day competency-based workshop will prepare the community healthcare provider with the knowledge and skills to care for a child with a tracheostomy.  Respiratory assessments, safety issues, oxygen therapy, care of the tracheostomy including suctioning, stoma care and tube changes, and managing urgent situations will be addressed.  A pre-reading package is required to be completed prior to attending the workshop in order to participate in discussions and learning activities.  Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills and participate in simulation scenarios caring for a child with a tracheostomy.

Pre-requisites: Participants should have a basic understanding of the respiratory system. Registered participants are required to complete the learning package prior to attending the virtual workshop in order to fully participate in the learning activities planned throughout the day.

Objectives

  1. Identify the indications for receiving a tracheostomy
  2. Demonstrate appropriate physical assessment of the respiratory system
  3. Discuss the importance of maintaining a safe environment
  4. Discuss oxygen therapy and humidification related to tracheostomies
  5. Demonstrate skin and stoma care
  6. Demonstrate proper technique when suctioning a tracheostomy tube
  7. Demonstrate how to change a tracheostomy tube
  8. Practice common urgent/emergent situations and management
  9. Provide safe, competent care for a child with a tracheostomy in a simulation
