Description 

This full day competency-based workshop will prepare the community healthcare provider with the knowledge and skills to care for children requiring a central vascular access device.  Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills related to the care of a child requiring this technology.

Objectives

  1. Differentiate between a peripheral and central vascular access device (CVAD)
  2. Distinguish between the types of CVADs seen in pediatric community settings and their indications 
  3. Explain the common CVAD complications and prevention strategies 
  4. Demonstrate how to heparin lock a CVAD
  5. Demonstrate how to perform routine cap and dressing changes for a CVAD 
  6. Demonstrate how to access a subcutaneous port
