Pulmonary Clearance

Description 

This competency-based workshop will prepare the community healthcare provider with the knowledge and skills to care for a child that requires pulmonary clearance.  Respiratory assessments, safety issues and various methods of pulmonary clearance including suctioning, postural drainage, percussions and vibrations therapy, mechanical in-exsufflation and lung volume recruitment will be addressed. Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills.

Pre-requisites: Participants should have a basic understanding of the respiratory system. Registered participants are required to complete the pre-reading material prior to attending the workshop in order to fully participate in the learning activities planned throughout the day.

Objectives

  1. Identify the indications and contraindications for pulmonary clearance support
  2. Review manual pulmonary physiotherapy, suctioning, mechanical in-exsufflation, and lung volume recruitment
  3. Discuss the use of medications that support pulmonary clearance
  4. Practice appropriate techniques for providing pulmonary clearance to a child in the home
